Chapter 121: The Truth Shall Set You Free
Chapter 121: The Truth Shall Set You Free
Jason was done communicating with Debra and the boss, it was a strange conversation.
Jason didn’t expect him to be so friendly, it was hard to see a friendly person being in charge of a group such as this but he also suspected it might be a mask he was putting on.
Jason took a step back to process what they had just discussed, for as far as he knew.
They had accepted him into the camp and thanks to what he did, everyone looked at him with a certain level of respect.
Jason didn’t know this would be the thing that would get him on everyone’s good side.
And it was all thanks to Debra even though he wasn’t aware of the intention behind her actions but it didn’t matter, everything worked out in the end.
Jason was at home, he wanted to use the rest of the door to rest his sore limbs.
However, the familiar banging on the door alerted him of a visitor.
He soon heard multiple voices behind that door and knew who it was that had come to see him.
Jason sighed almost like he knew what awaited him should he open that door.
He thought about pretending to be asleep but that wouldn’t work because the banging would only get louder.
"Hey, dipshit! What’s taking so long!? Open the door!" Lillian screamed and Jason cracked a weak smile, he wanted to know why she was so foul-mouthed, she had no reason to.
The door was opened and Lillian rushed in like she was the owner of the house.
Jason saw that everyone had come and they looked genuinely surprised.
In the previous world, there was no way in hell that Jason could afford such a place but money was irrelevant here.
This made life a lot easier because if you wanted something, you just took it but if a community was to strive, surely they must have some sort of currency.
This encourages all to work hard to earn, it is how the world should be.
Jason’s eyes filtered through the ladies and the moment his eyes met that of Rachel, his face softened.
"Hey, you..." Jason greeted her to which Rachel nodded in response.
"Welcome to my home everyone," Jason was theatrical but he noticed that Bella looked a lot better than she did.
These meds were the real thing and all this was also because she had a good night’s sleep otherwise it wouldn’t have been possible.
"This is nice, I can’t lie," Clementine was the first to drop her opinion on his new home.
Jason could feel a sense of pride building but he wasn’t going to let it show.
"Well, thank you," Jason responded but he noticed the other two ladies weren’t impressed.
"You haven’t cleaned it yet?" Allison asked Jason who wondered how she knew.
He gave the house a closer look and realized it was covered in dust.
This was the least of his troubles, his body was recoiling from all the stress and wounds it had accumulated.
"Yeah, I sort of had bigger things to deal with," Jason said but no one understood what he meant by this except Rachel.
"I also have good news," Jason said and the ladies all gave him their full attention.
"I got it!" Jason exclaimed but Lillian was confused.
"Didn’t you already get in? Isn’t that why you got this sweet ass house?" Lillian asked and this was a valid question.
Jason sighed, he knew he couldn’t disclose what Debra had him do but he could tell the version of it that she told the boss.
"Shit, I didn’t even ask him his name!" Jason blurted out randomly.
"Who?" Clementine asked but Jason didn’t mean for this thought to be out loud.
"My bad, the guy in charge of the raiders. I forgot to ask his name." Jason said in a more collected tone.
"I went over the wall last night..." Jason finally revealed what he did and Rachel already knew he went but this was the first time he was confirming it verbally.
"What did you go and do?" Clementine asked, she was surprised that they allowed him over the wall without their knowledge.
This wasn’t something that should have happened because he was still a new recruit but she didn’t want to jump to conclusions. At least, not now.
"Yeah, I went to retrieve some meds but there is nothing to worry about, I went with Debra." Jason said and this was where Rachel’s brows furrowed.
She would have believed Jason if she hadn’t seen Debral break into his house.
"Be careful Jason, don’t trust so easily," Clementine warned him but Jason brushed it aside because there was no reason to worry.
He had it under control and he could also take care of himself.
There was nothing to worry about at this point and Jason was self-aware enough to understand the dangers that came with his new position.
"Can I talk to you for a moment?" Rachel requested and Jason nodded.
Rachel stepped outside with Jason following behind her, he wanted to know what was so important that she would request a private audience.
"Does she want to discuss what happened last night?" Jason thought to himself.
"No, that can’t be it. That conversation will be far too awkward to have right now," Jason thought to himself as he wondered what it was that she wanted to discuss in the first place.
"I need to talk to you about something.." Rachel began and Jason could feel his thumping heart anticipate the words that were about to come out of her mouth.
"What do you wish to tell me?" Jason asked.
"It is about last night..." Rachel said, pausing momentarily and Jason couldn’t believe that she wanted to talk about that here.
"Can this wait, Rachel? I don’t think now is the time..." Jason tried to delay but Rachel was confused by what he meant by this.
"What’re you talking about?" Rachel asked and Jason couldn’t believe she was going to make him say it.
"You know... What happened in the shower?" Jason hinted but this only resulted in a giggle from Rachel. She couldn’t understand how he thought that was what she wanted to discuss seeing as nothing even happened.
Sure, they had a moment but that was about it.
"Geez, I didn’t know it was that funny," Jason looked a little embarrassed.
"No, no, You have it wrong Jason. What I want to know is why you just lied to everyone..." The moment Rachel uttered the second sentence, her entire demeanour changed.
"Huh?" Jason’s brow arched upward.
"You don’t need to lie to me, Jason..." Rachel said and Jason now had two choices.
Lie to her and risk losing her trust or tell her about exactly what was happening as an extension of his trust in her.
"You know what? Fuck it... I was sent above the wall by Debra to retrieve the bag of medicine but I didn’t know there was a horde nearby. If I had used my gun to get rid of the zombies, I would have had a horde to deal with by myself." Jason chose to come clean and he could tell that Rachel was relieved that he was transparent with her.
She rummaged through her pockets and handed him a note.
"What’s this?" Jason asked.
"Look through it, Debra came into your house with a strange man and dropped that note," Rachel told Jason.
Jason didn’t understand why anyone would go to such lengths to do so but as he read the note, he understood that this was her way of ensuring nothing happened to her in case he did die.
"This is interesting..." Jason said with a smile but Rachel could tell that he was hurt.
It meant that Debra knew that the possibility that he would die was higher than the chance that he would survive yet she tossed him there with no way to protect himself.
"Are you okay?" Rachel asked, she kept what Clementine told her in mind.
Jason needed her to make up for his weaknesses and she had every intention of fulfilling that role.
"Yeah, thank you for telling me this, Rachel..." Jason said and Rachel nodded.
"That bitch..." This was the only thought in Jason’s head and he kept the note in his pocket.
"What are you going to do with the note?" Rachel asked.
"Oh, this? Think of it as our get-out-of-jail-free card," Jason responded.
Rachel didn’t know how to feel about it but it sounded like he planned to leverage it against Debra. She knew that this had the potential to escalate but she also knew that Jason needed to show Debra that he wasn’t a pushover.
"Don’t do anything too crazy. You couldn’t even stand on your own last night or have you forgotten?" Rachel teased him.
"Damn it, Rachel! Don’t talk about that now!" Jason said, trying to shush.
"Wait? Was that what you were talking about?" Rachel questioned and she could tell by Jason’s face that it was.
"O-M-G, I cannot believe it!" Rachel was theatrical as she began to laugh.
"SHUT UP!" Jason responded with a slightly reddened face.
