Chapter 211: Bait Of the Undead?
Chapter 211: Bait Of the Undead?
Glenn and the others had managed to get away from the horde all thanks to Dimitris and they followed the plan that Jeff had proposed.
Glenn knew that they couldn’t engage the zombies with the ammunition they had and the fact that they had Carl with them meant that they had to protect the boy.
However, they were having trouble finding shelter to lay low and even encountered a few zombies on the way.
"This place is swarming with the undead!" Carl blurted out but the other two men were focused on the task at hand.
They knew that things weren’t looking good and they were encountering more zombies as time passed.
This was dangerous but they soon saw shelter, an abandoned house in the middle of nowhere that looked like it was barely standing.
Jeff made sure to sweep the building briefly to make sure it was clear while Glenn stayed outside with Carl to make sure nothing was amiss.
"Clear!" Jeff said and the two entered but they were surprised by what they found inside.
There was food and drinks which was strange considering how old this place was but the dusty environment told them that no one had been here for quite some time.
"This is strange..." Glenn muttered but Jeff shared this thought as the question dawned on him.
What happened to the last occupant?
"We need to leave, I have a bad feeling about this," Glenn pointed out.
"Nonsense, there is nothing that could go wrong, we just need to lay low and replenish our energy. There is food, who knows where else we would see food?" Jeff questioned.
This was another good point by him as they couldn’t rely on gut feeling without any concrete reason behind it.
Jason’s outburst was the reason that they were in this mess, Jeff began to doubt Dimitris was capable of leading them if he was spooked by something so trivial.
They should have gone down that road and maybe they wouldn’t be in this mess.
Jeff wasn’t aware that there were zombies that they wouldn’t wish to encounter waiting for them up there. They would be dead if they continued to travel up that path.
"Eat up kid, we don’t know when this opportunity will come again," Jeff muttered, grabbing a canned food and popping it open.
But the moment he opened the can, he tossed it to the ground in disgust.
"What’s wrong?" Glenn questioned only to have his answer as maggots crawled out.
The can had not only been tampered with but the cause of the maggot was an eyeball.
"How the fuck did that get in there!?" Jeff freaked out and who could blame him?
It took him by surprise but before the conversation could go further, they had the growling of zombies outside.
"What? How are they here?" Jeff questioned, trying his best to remain quiet but it was like something was drawing them here.
Glenn and Carl kept their mouths shut, one would expect Carl to be the one to freak out but he was surprisingly calm even though his heart was thumping.
He was scared shitless but he knew he couldn’t show it or they might forbid him from joining them on their next raid.
"It was a trap..." Glenn muttered to himself. But who could lay such a trap and how did the zombies find them the moment they came here?
They were trapped, there was no escaping this current predicament because they were surrounded.
"Fuck..." Glenn cussed under his breath because they found themselves in the worst-case scenario.
-
They weren’t the only ones having trouble, Dimitris was secluded from his people and he was being watched by something.
Dimitris was putting the pieces together and they weren’t matching up.
Even with what Jason had told him, there was no way a zombie should be capable of such complex communication.
Before he could delve deeper into his thoughts, he heard a sound behind him but he didn’t see anything when he looked back.
"What?" Dimitris muttered because there was nothing there and he wasn’t one to doubt what he heard.
There was something here even if he couldn’t see it at the moment.
"Is it watching me?" Dimitris thought because a normal zombie would have attacked him the moment they saw his presence so was this one of the zombies that Jason had spoken about?
There was no telling if it was even a zombie to begin with but he wasn’t going to risk it.
Dimitris began to back away from this location and realized that he had unknowingly headed towards the path that Jason told them to stay clear of.
He hadn’t even wandered inside and was even further out than he had driven.
Dimitris knew that he was in danger and braced himself for what was to come and it came in the form of a zombie but this was the same zombie that had thrown the stone at him.
Dimitris could recognize it because of what it was wearing but he had a bone to pick with it.
Dimitris equipped his knife, ready for combat but the zombie stopped in its tracks and tilted its head upward.
Dimitris didn’t know what was happening but he saw the zombie gradually open its mouth, realizing that the jaws were dislocated so it could open it wider than the average human.
"What the hell is it doing?" Dimitris thought; he couldn’t help but be curious and he would soon regret not putting it down as the zombie let out a shriek that echoed throughout the area.
It was so loud that Dimitris had to cover his ears as it was disorientating but then what he feared most came to pass.
He heard multiple footsteps heading his way but these things weren’t casually walking towards him.
"What the fuck!? Are they running!?" Dimitris thought but he had to stop whatever it was this zombie was doing and he did just that by tossing a dagger right into its forehead killing it but the damage had already been done.
Dimitris was being chased by a different type of zombie, the runner class and one of the most troublesome in terms of the evolved zombie classes.
