Chapter 94: Hunter Hunted
Chapter 94: Hunter Hunted
Jason and Sam were headed to the car’s location and thanks to their injuries, they were rather slow in doing so.
Allison trailed them, she could easily gun them down, which would have been the more logical solution but something told her to follow them.
She always relied on her guts, and she still had the element of surprise.
Sam, however, was already aware of her presence, Sam knew they were being followed as there was no way he would let down his guard in enemy territory but he knew he couldn’t let Jason know they were being followed or tip off the lady that he knew they were being followed.
Sam smirked, this could work in his favour as he momentarily thought how he could kill two birds with one stone.
"Yo Sam, you there buddy?" Jason called out, he wasn’t hostile towards Sam.
Jason knew from his gaming experience and media consumption that one needed someone like Sam on their team.
In The Walking Dead, it was Shane, in The Last of Us it was Joe but Sam was a tad bit more extreme than the others.
"Jason, how are you still standing with all those wounds?" Sam asked, this wasn’t normal considering he was a mere civilian.
"I have no idea but something tells me if I think too much about it, my body will shut down," Jason joked but Sam didn’t find this funny.
Sam was beginning to wonder who Jason was, the fact that he decapitated Lorenzo like a butcher, there was no way that a normal person would do something so gruesome on a whim.
The same person who preaches about giving others a second chance at life. this was awfully suspicious.
Jason was a red flag and Sam wanted to know if he was a red flag that he could use or one he had to get rid of because as insane as Sam might appear, all his choices were logical.
He has been to war and he understands the dark side of humanity better than everyone else there.
Sam knew that there are irredeemable people in this world and trying to find their redemption is the one thing that will doom them.
"Besides, you’re one to talk. You took two fucking bullets!" Jason exclaimed.
This was impressive, bullets kill people and Sam not only survived but he was strong enough to move around.
His wounds were a lot more severe than Jason even though Jason was unsure if it caused internal damage.
When Cindy was torturing him, she made sure to avoid any major organ because she wasn’t allowed to kill Jason then, she needed the information he had.
"What can I say, I’m allergic to death," Sam replied with a chuckle.
Sam was stalling, he was keeping Jason focused on him and it was working flawlessly.
"Sam, I admire you..." Jason muttered but Sam raised a brow, this was out of the blue.
"What do you mean?" Sam asked, he wanted to know Jason’s reason for saying this.
"I don’t know, man, you just know how to make the tough calls... If we listened to you earlier, I don’t think we would have been in this situation..." Jason said.
This showed Sam that Jason was self-aware enough to know that he understood where Sam was coming from.
"I have lived a shitty life, I don’t know why but living has never been something I looked forward to, I just wasted my life on games but for some reason, I’m fighting my hardest to survive so it goes to say that living is something I didn’t know I wanted until the apocalypse began..." Jason continued, Sam kept quiet because he wanted Jason to keep talking.
Maybe this way he could figure out just who or what this man was.
"I was quick to give up on people but I decided that I would do the opposite of what I would have done. If we had taken your advice, we might not have been in this situation but what if we didn’t? We wouldn’t have known that such a threat existed... I’m not stupid, I know my choices have consequences but so does everyone." Jason said.
"You fascinate me, Jason. What if your decision claimed Rachel’s life?" Sam proposed a very simple question.
"That will be unfortunate but it is fate, I don’t think you can mess with fate. That bullet could have killed you if it was a little higher but it wasn’t. It wasn’t luck, it was fate..." Jason said bluntly and Sam’s face creased into an eerie smile.
He didn’t realize that Jason saw the world this way but this wasn’t what he wanted to know even though this information was welcomed.
"Is that why you chopped off that guy’s head? Was that fate?" Sam asked directly.
Jason’s entire body language changed the moment these words came out of Sam’s mouth.
Sam smirked upon noticing this because it seemed that he had struck a nerve just as he intended.
"I don’t want to talk about that..." Jason brought the conversation to an abrupt end and Sam had no intentions of pressing any further either.
"I need to go take a piss..." Sam said, this was random.
"Can’t you hold it or just pee here?" Jason questioned, wondering why he needed to go away from this spot to piss.
"I’m shy," Sam joked with Jason rolling his eyes. He didn’t care much for such jokes but it was Sam. Something told Jason that Sam would be fine regardless of what happens because Sam had something that all of them lacked and that was a survival instinct.
Jason watched Sam as he walked away, he knew he had to wait for him there.
-
Sam left the vicinity and the purpose of splitting from Jason was soon revealed.
He walked away from the area to draw the person who was trailing them away from Jason and focused on him.
If the person intended to do any harm, this would be the perfect time to strike, there wouldn’t be a better chance than this to do so.
Sam knew this and relied on this bit of information because it could easily go south if the person decided to go after Jason first but it was common sense to go after the target that wanders away from their group.
Sam’s strategy worked, Allison trailed him but the fact that he was still standing told him that maybe this person didn’t want to kill them just yet.
"Why don’t you come out and tell me why you’re following me..." Sam said but of course, he was met with no verbal response, just the whistling wind.
"If you haven’t pulled the trigger yet, it’s either my dashing looks that’s keeping me alive or you have a different motive..." Sam said and these were the words that made Allison step out.
Allison came into view and Sam couldn’t believe how small she was. Did they think that just because she escaped dwarfism she wouldn’t be seen?
"Damn, did they run out of adults?" Sam questioned the moment she came into view with a gun already pulled.
"How long did you know you were being followed?" Allison asked, unaffected by his taunt.
"Since the beginning but something tells me you were meant to kill us so why haven’t you?" Sam asked.
"You... You killed Lorenzo?" Allison questioned.
"Big girl with the whole evil vibe? Yes, we killed him. Will that be a problem?" Sam asked, Allison had seen his head earlier but she wasn’t sure.
But confirming that the man that had killed Cindy was dead brought a sense of relief that she didn’t even know existed.
"Thank goodness... That piece of shit got exactly what he deserved! I was ordered to kill you..." Allison said and Sam was a soldier who understood the power that orders held.
"You’re going against your superiors?" Sam questioned.
"I could easily pull the trigger and kill you now, can’t I? Don’t get ahead of yourself, I never said I was going to let you live," Allison was clear.
"But..." Allison said, looking conflicted on what to do in this situation.
"But?" Sam questioned, Sam was unfazed by the gun pointed at him.
"But it’s a good thing I never saw you," Allison said and Sam smirked the moment she said this.
"You ladies... I don’t understand you... You disobey an order so easily?" Sam questioned.
Allison was irritated by the way he spoke, he should be jumping for joy that she allowed him to leave yet he was finding a way to make her regret her decision.
"You know what? Nevermind..." Allison said as she was ready to empty the clip of her gun.
"Woah! I was just kidding, lighten up a little," Sam responded with a cocky smile.
He was surprisingly charismatic but this was no surprise.
"If you aren’t killing us, maybe you could help us?" Sam pushed his luck further because he had nothing to lose at this point and he hoped that his gamble would pay off.
