System Of The Undead

Chapter 154: Whac-A-Mole!

Chapter 154: Whac-A-Mole!

Franklin and A needed to have a chat because Franklin had to find out as much information as possible, he needed to know the dangers that this new state harboured.

Something told Franklin it wasn’t just the zombies that they needed to worry about but A wasn’t saying anything.

"How did you do it?" A asked Franklin, this was an important question as Franklin could tell the truth or tell a lie.

"We were lucky, your men managed to draw out the majority of the zombies so it was a walk in the park..." Franklin downplayed the difficulty and this showed that he understood the threat that A posed.

Franklin would be stupid to trust him as he didn’t know what they were or where they came from. They did attempt to kill them and Franklin was sure this wasn’t the first time either.

"The hospital was filled with zombies, there is no way that it would have been easy," A said and Franklin raised a brow.

"Are you doubting my words?" Franklin asked, his voice turning hostile but A wasn’t intimidated.

"That is right, if you got the medicine that means you must have seen it," A said.

"Seen it?" Franklin questioned, he had an idea what he was talking about but he wanted to be sure that A was on the same page.

"The zombie that consumes other zombies," A said bluntly and this was where he had Franklin fucked up because the zombie he had seen wasn’t that.

"That is absurd, the dead don’t feed on the dead," Franklin responded but A shook his head.

"This one does, it feeds on everything," A said and this could explain why they didn’t meet any zombies on the third floor.

If what A was saying is true then there was a possibility that it fed on all zombies residing on that floor even though it was a long shot.

"You saw it, didn’t you?" A said, he could read Franklin’s face.

"You..." Franklin muttered because if A knew this then his keeping it away from them proved that his intentions weren’t pure.

This was information that they should have known.

"Did you think we couldn’t make our way into the hospital?" A asked, the fact that they had a tactic to draw the zombies away from the building supported this question.

They could have entered the hospital but they couldn’t defeat whatever was on the third floor.

The evolved zombie was a threat because it possessed a form of intelligence even though he couldn’t confirm this.

Franklin just had new information that it consumed other zombies and this could only mean that it was to strengthen itself or something along the line.

"It wasn’t my intention to trick you but you’re strangers, you have to prove to us that you were worth sparing and you have done just that. You will have my support in your raid," A said.

Franklin couldn’t even be mad because he knew the kind of person that A was.

A was direct and this information would have made them hesitant to proceed with the mission.

From a strategic point of view, it was a smart move but Franklin couldn’t afford something like this happening again.

"I need you to be transparent with me going forward. A..." Franklin addressed the man with his letter but A didn’t give any verbal response but his body language seemed to agree with him.

-

"Hahahaha! See? You can talk!" Sam mocked, the doctor was unconscious with chunks of skin missing from his face.

Sam stopped taking away skin from his body and focused on his face as the skin there was far more sensitive.

The doctor couldn’t take the pain and lost consciousness but Sam got the information that he needed.

He didn’t know if he should hand him over to Anderson or kill him because this man was a threat. However, he established that there wasn’t a cure, this meant that the world was here to stay.

Hours passed and Sam knew this was an opportunity for him to search the room and to Sam’s surprise, he found a strange fragment seated on a stand.

The crafting of the stand is what caught his eye otherwise Sam would have missed the fragment.

The fragment was so small, that he could barely see it with his eyes, the only thing that made seeing it possible was its glowing properties.

It was as small as an ant but as bright as a light bulb and Sam’s face was indifferent.

"So this is what he used?" I don’t know how you did it but movies never end well with the mad scientist left alive," Sam muttered under his breath.

He had fun with the zombies but he knew that this was only the first step, evolution was a constant thing and the zombies couldn’t become the apex predator.

Sam liked that humanity stood at the pinnacle and he had no interest in this changing.

"You know what?" Sam spoke to himself, the man was still unconscious so whatever Sam was about to do would be painless.

Sam grabbed the knife on the table, putting both of the doctor’s hands on a flat surface before cutting off his finger.

He had the brains to contort these things but that brain would be useless if he lost the ability to carry them out.

Sam knew that Anderson needed his brain but he didn’t say anything about his hands.

But something happened while Sam was cutting off his fingers, the doctor’s eyes shot open.

"Damn, you should have stayed asleep," Sam said in an indifferent tone, in actuality, he didn’t care.

"We still have one more hand to go, man," Sam said; the doctor had tears streaming down his face but this was a man who went above and beyond to acquire Sam.

He wanted to turn Sam into one of these mindless creatures but Sam was no one’s test subject.

Sam knew that this situation he was in, it was only him that was capable of navigating through it.

There was no other way another could have done so but Sam was glad that he didn’t have to waste his time anymore.

"Oh well" Sam said, slicing off the fingers on the doctor’s other hand and this sent the doctor’s body into shock.

"Really? Now you decide to go into shock?" Sam asked; he looked around and luckily for the doctor, Sam was well trained to see him through this episode due to his military training.

Sam did the necessary things to make sure the doctor stayed alive before securing the door to make sure any leftover zombies didn’t get through.

Sam didn’t know how he was going to do it but Sam now had a new target.

The base had fallen so there was no longer any reason for him to stay here.

He thought about returning to Clementine but he had treated her quite poorly so he could sever whatever bond they shared.

Sam knew that Clementine depended on him and that was the last thing he could have her doing, it was a weakness he couldn’t have her possessing.

Clementine needed to stand on her own because the world was nothing like it once was.

There were no longer any rules in place to protect her and Sam knew that there would come a day where even he would fail her.

Sam knew it was the best choice for her to join Jason because Jason possessed the humanity that he lacked.

"Why am I thinking about her now?" Sam questioned himself, confused by these thoughts as he viewed Clementine as a nuisance but she was useful so he kept her around.

But what Sam did today was no small feat, he had single-handedly taken down a horde of zombies and incapacitated the man responsible for it.

This was something no one but Sam could have done but what was Sam’s next mission now that the military had lost their chain of command?

-

Rachel and the rest of the girls were back at their various stations but Rachel was finding herself increasingly intrigued by Mathias.

She had a hand to play in getting the diagnosis, in reality, Mathias had no knowledge of it.

This was why Rachel knew that getting close to this man was no longer an option but a priority as she could help out in more ways than one.

However, something told her that Mathias had a lot more going than meets the eye.

"Rachel, can I see you privately?" Mathias requested while she was outside, she had just finished eating so she had no reason to decline.

"Sure," Rachel responded and Mathias took her to a room in the hospital that turned out to be his office.

Rachel was surprised that he had an office, she assumed he was a nurse at best who occasionally filled in for the older doctor when he wasn’t available but he was a lot more settled than she originally thought.

Bella and Allison told him about his mistakes but in all fairness, he was learning on the job and she had seen his dedication first-hand in regards to the safety of his patients.

No doctor hadn’t lost a patient and Rachel wasn’t going to draw her opinion of him based on this.

"Rachel, I need you to be honest with me," Mathias started the conversation, there was a hint of desperation in his voice and Rachel instantly knew what it was he was about to ask.

She gulped in anticipation but was Rachel capable of lying to a man she deemed good?

"I don’t know who but I believe this hospital has a mole," Mathias said and Rachel was put on the spot, she couldn’t do anything that would give her away.

"A mole?" Rachel repeated, partly surprised.

"Someone accessed the medical record of a patient and leaked it. Now the hospital has come under scrutiny," Mathias said, focusing his intense gaze on Rachel.

Rachel was waiting for the next words to come out of his mouth that accused her directly or indirectly but this wasn’t the case.

"I need you to tell me if you saw anything suspicious," Mathias said and Rachel was both surprised and relieved by this question.

However, this brought an even more difficult decision as the question in her head was.

"Who will I throw under the bus?"
